He had a passion for teaching others about learning, science, and scientific research. He earned his undergraduate and doctorate degrees in Microbiology at the University of Minnesota, followed by his postdoctoral research at the John Innes Institute in Norwich, England (1983-1986).

As a professor of Microbiology at both Indiana University (1986-1993) and Miami University (1993-2015), he mentored and taught thousands of graduate and undergraduate students. His compassion and dedication to students was truly remarkable, earning him Miami University’s Associated Student Government “Honored Professor” award three times.

Dr. Janssen was well respected within the scientific community and made significant contributions to the understanding of translation in bacteria, antibiotic resistance genes, and the regulatory effects of phosphate on Streptomyces metabolism. In addition to his extensive experience in microbiology research and education, he had a deep love and knowledge of every music genre and was an avid student of music and musicology.

This fund honors the memory of Dr. Janssen by supporting the research and educational mission of graduate students in the life sciences and music studies.
