Miami University’s 1809 LGBTQ+ group’s mission is to provide a professional and educational network of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer alumni as well as foster support for LGBTQ+ students currently attending Miami University. By partnering with the Center for Student Diversity & Inclusion's LGBTQ+ Initiatives we strive to support all Miamians.

Priority Funds

Roy Bowen Ward Scholarship
This fund allows us to annually award the Roy Bowen Ward Scholarship to committed, courageous LGBTQ+ students working to make positive change on campus for students and the Miami Culture. It is given in honor of Dr. Ward, Miami professor of Comparative Religion from 1964-2007.

LGBTQ+ Services Endowment
This endowment supports all activities of LGBTQ+ Services. Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer+ Services provides support, education, and advocacy around issues of sexual orientation and gender identity for the entire Miami University community.

Donald W. Fritz LGBTQ+ Scholarship
The available annual distribution is to be used to support programs offered by the Office of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer+ Services at Miami University. In the event there is not a programming need in any given year, the available annual distribution may be used to support the most pressing needs of the Office of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer+ Services at Miami University.

Tom Grote/Rick Neal LGBTQ+ Miami Merger Scholarship
The available annual distribution is to be awarded by the Office of Student Financial Assistance to one or more Miami University students. Nominations of the recipient(s) shall be recommended by the Director of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer+ Services at Miami University to then submit to the Office of Student Financial Assistance. The selection will be made without regard to the student's financial need or GPA.

William J. Gracie, Jr. LGBTQ+ Scholarship
The available annual distribution is to be awarded by the Office of Student Financial Assistance to one or more Miami University students. Nominations of the recipient(s) shall be recommended by the Board of the 1809 LGBTQ+ Alumni of Miami University to the Director of the Office of GLBT Service at Miami University to then submit to the Office of Student Financial Assistance. If the Board of 1809 LGBTQ+ Alumni does not make a recommendation in any given year or no longer exists, the recommendation shall come from the Director of LGBTQ+ Services, the distribution shall be awarded the following year or returned to principal.

J. Andrew Zeisler LGBTQ+ Scholarship
The available annual distribution is to be awarded by the Office of Student Financial Assistance to one or more Miami University students demonstrating leadership and involvement at the university. Nominations of the recipient(s) shall be recommended by the Board of the 1809 LGBTQ+ Alumni of Miami University to the Director of the Office of LGBTQ+ Services at Miami University to then submit to the Office of Student Financial Assistance. If the Board of 1809 LGBTQ+ Alumni does not make a recommendation or no longer exists, the recommendation shall come from the Director of the Office of LGBTQ+ Services. Preferences shall be given for students currently enrolled in or majoring in either the College of Creative Arts or the School of Education, Health and Society. If no nominations are received by the Office of Student Financial Assistance by June 30 every year, the Office of Student Financial Assistance shall award the Scholarship to one or more Miami students meeting the criteria above. The selection will be made without regard to the student's financial need or GPA.

Michael R. Burkhart LGBTQ+ Leader Scholarship
The available annual distribution is to be awarded by the Office of Student Financial Assistance to one or more Miami University students who have shown a commitment to leadership in the advancement of inclusiveness within the Miami community and beyond. While leadership activities are primary, financial need and academic excellence will also be considered. Nominations of the recipient(s) shall be recommended by the Board of the 1809 LGBTQ+ Alumni of Miami University to the Director of the Office of LGBTQ+ Services at Miami University to then submit to the Office of Student Financial Assistance. If the Board of 1809 LGBTQ+ Alumni does not make a recommendation in any given year or no longer exists, the recommendation shall come from the Director of the Office of LGBTQ+ Services.
