From growing up in a low-income family to becoming a successful business owner and one of the country’s foremost authorities on flavor, Dave Dafoe ’84 has long kept a close association with Miami.

In 2018, Dafoe made a $30.1 million gift to the College of Arts and Science to provide scholarships for high-need students and put the dream of attending Miami within financial reach for many.

“The academic and social opportunities at Miami changed my life and shaped me as a person,” Dafoe said. “Without support, I would not have been able to attend Miami. I want to offer those same opportunities to future generations of Miamians.”

His gift earned Dafoe the 2018 Philanthropist of the Year honor, awarded annually to alumni or other friends of the university who make a noteworthy, university-wide impact or has supported or directed fundraising for a specific major university priority project. The recipient should be someone who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in providing the resources to make Miami a force for good in the world today and for decades to come.
