The College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) has received a $1.5 million commitment to help ensure the best and brightest faculty are recruited to Miami.

A friend of the college and Miami, who has requested not to receive publicity at this time, is committing part of their estate to ensure that the Department of Chemical, Paper and Biomedical Engineering is able to recruit outstanding faculty members, with a specific interest in the Paper Science program, for future generations.

In addition to being one of the largest single gift commitments in CEC history, it is the second largest focused directly on faculty recruitment.

The gift was conceived as a result of the donor’s experience not only with their career in the paper science industry, but through decades of direct engagement with Miami, the department, and numerous students.

“We have seen decades of students graduate from the program and go on to incredible careers. We hope that ensuring the faculty has the best intellectual scholarship and leadership abilities will allow this to continue for generations to come,” said the donor.

The generous gift will support a faculty member in the Department of Chemical, Paper and Biomedical Engineering by covering annual compensation, professional expenses, and research funding. This type of support provides faculty members with opportunities to acquire knowledge and experience with cutting-edge technologies, and bring an innovative approach to the curriculum.

“Endowed faculty lines … help us recruit and retain talented faculty, who are key to the high-quality education we provide at Miami. The endowments render an element of prestige while also providing some support for research and professional development for the faculty member,” said Dinesh and ILA Paliwal Dean Beena Sukumaran.

The CEC and over 160 faculty members from four departments educate more than 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students each year through over 30 majors and minors. The CEC continues to build on a 60-year legacy of excellence, having been recognized as a Top 10 U.S. News & World Report Undergraduate Engineering program at a National Public University and one of the Top 20 programs for a number of specific degrees.
