The College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) has received a commitment in excess of $1 million to increase scholarship offerings for students interested in studying Mechanical Engineering. A friend of Miami and CEC is making an immediate impact with their gift to provide scholarship support to current students. The gift is one of the largest single gifts and scholarship gifts in CEC history.

The generous gift will establish an endowed scholarship intended to one or more undergraduate scholarships for future mechanical Engineers.

“Mechanical Engineering is a broad field that prepares students to design, analyze, and improve mechanical systems. Our program focuses on developing students' problem-solving abilities and hands-on experience. Mechanical engineers are well-prepared to enter the workforce, and historically as well as in the future, they have always been in high demand with excellent salaries and career prospects,” said Kumar Singh, Chair and Professor of the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.

The new scholarship will help to alleviate the burden of college debt for our students, and allow them to focus on becoming the best engineers they can be. “Scholarship funding is critical in recruiting high achieving students from all backgrounds to the college. Scholarships are key to retention and success of students, especially those who might not be able to afford college otherwise,” said Dinesh and ILA Paliwal Dean Beena Sukumaran.

The CEC and over 160 faculty members from four departments educate more than 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students each year through over 30 majors and minors. The CEC continues to build on a 60-year legacy of excellence, having been recognized as a Top 10 U.S. News & World Report Undergraduate Engineering program at a National Public University and one of the Top 20 programs for a number of specific degrees.
