The Institute for the Environment and Sustainability (IES) is a proud partner with HASI, offering their Climate Solutions Scholarship to Miami students since 2021. This scholarship was made possible through a grant from HASI, whose mission is to “accelerate a just transition toward an equitable, inclusive, and climate positive future.”

“The missions of HASI and IES are perfectly in-line,” said Jonathan Levy, director of the IES. “IES has been dedicated to finding solutions to environmental problems for over 54 years. In the past decade, we have come to realize that all environmental problems are also social justice issues. Hundreds of studies have demonstrated that the impacts of environmental degradation disproportionately affect lower-income and marginalized communities in the U.S. and across the globe.”

Scholarship applicants must be juniors or seniors who are co-majoring or minoring in programs within IES and demonstrate financial need. Special consideration is given to students who have overcome obstacles such as socioeconomic or educational disadvantage or disabilities, or who are the first generation in their family to attend college. The scholarship also benefits groups that are historically underrepresented at Miami University, such as African-Americans, Native Americans, or LatinX, etc.

HASI was created to offer long-term, strategic efforts to combat climate change and champion social justice through philanthropy. They focus on offering equitable climate change solutions to disadvantaged and underrepresented communities and building efficient, renewable energy infrastructure. HASI also works to support programs that provide education about the impact of climate change and training for careers in relevant fields combating climate change.

“In 2022, Miami signed on to the Presidents’ Climate Leadership Commitments, and IES has been at the forefront of developing Miami’s Climate Action Plan,” Levy said. “Like HASI, we are exploring ways of reaching carbon neutrality that are not just economically feasible, but promote social justice as well. The alignment of our visions and missions make me particularly thankful to HASI for their generous support of our students.”
